Christian Converts Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Ghorban Tourani’s Death
Twenty years after the killing of Ghorban Tourani, Christian converts gathered to honor his memory. Participants lit candles and laid flowers in remembrance of a man who, according to those gathered, lost his life because of his Christian faith and peaceful religious activities.
Ghorban Tourani, a native of Gonbad-e Kavus born into a Muslim family, converted to Christianity and devoted his life to serving God. In his hometown, he established a house church and took on its leadership. Through his ministry, at least twelve Turkmen individuals embraced the Christian faith.
Participants recalled that Tourani paid the ultimate price for sharing the message of the Gospel. After enduring repeated intimidation and threats, he was reportedly abducted in November 2005, and his body was found a few hours later near his home.
According to those commemorating him, security forces searched his residence following his death, reportedly looking for Persian-language Bibles and Christian literature. It was also alleged that Turkmen Christian activists were warned that they could face a fate similar to Tourani’s if they continued their Christian activities.
Those attending the memorial described Ghorban Tourani as a faithful servant of God whose memory continues to inspire others. They expressed their hope that his legacy and commitment to his faith would never be forgotten.
