On the eve of the World Day Against the Death Penalty and in protest against more than one thousand executions in the current year. As in the past, we honor the memory of Pastor Hossein Soodmand, who was executed in Iran on charges of apostasy, and Pastors Haik Hovsepian Mehr, Tateos Mikaelian, and Mehdi Dibaj, who were killed through extrajudicial executions.
For 47 years, the Islamic Republic has executed tens of thousands of Iranians.
Execution takes away a fundamental human right, which is the right to life.
Regarding executions related to drug trafficking, the primary accused is the Islamic Republic regime itself, which, by creating economic collapse and spreading poverty, has instilled in the minds of young people—even the educated—the temptation to escape poverty in the shortest possible time.
Regarding executions based on retribution (qisas), the main accused is also the regime itself, which, by institutionalizing violence, promoting a lack of culture and tolerance, and moral decline, has laid the groundwork for many murders. By shifting responsibility onto the victim’s family—through the notion of forgiving the killer—it absolves itself of accountability.
Execution must be removed from the judicial system, death sentences must be abolished, and replaced with other forms of punishment.
